Oyamazumi Jinja is a venerable shrine located in the Nishinoseki area of Ehime Prefecture. Since ancient times, it has been deeply revered as a guardian deity for maritime safety and successful seafaring. With over 120 festivals and ceremonies held throughout the year, the shrine serves as a vibrant center for preserving Japan's rich ritualistic culture. It plays a vital role in the local community, hosting prayers for significant life milestones and seasonal events.
The shrine observes six major annual festivals, including the Kinensai, Reitaisai, Ota-ue Matsuri, Sunai Dai-sai, Nukaho-sai, and Shin-nosai. These rituals are essential ceremonies to express gratitude for agriculture, nature, and the prosperity of the region. Furthermore, the tradition of offering prayers for various needs—such as family safety, business prosperity, and traffic safety—has been passed down through generations. The history of the shrine is defined by the solemn prayers offered by Shinto priests to ensure both individual well-being and regional stability.
Visitors can witness a variety of seasonal rituals within the shrine grounds. For instance, ceremonies related to rice planting and harvest festivals follow the natural cycle of the seasons. At the Shofusa-jojo (amulet office), you can receive sacred talismans (Ofuda), charms (Omamori), and Goshuin (temple/shrine stamps) as proof of your visit. The ability to experience formal worship led by Shinto priests for specific personal wishes is one of the most distinctive features of this sacred site.
The shrine grounds are open from sunrise until 5:00 PM. Depending on the season, you may witness major festivals related to agriculture or seasonal transitions. From spring to autumn, many rituals centered on gratitude for nature's bounty and local traditions take place. Visiting during the bright daylight hours is ideal for appreciating the architectural beauty and the serene atmosphere of the shrine grounds.
Visitors can experience the fundamental ritual of purification by washing hands and mouth at the Temizuya (purification fountain). You may also request specific prayers (Kito) for matters such as family safety, academic success, or traffic safety. For special ceremonies like traditional Shinto weddings, arrangements can be made through prior consultation with the priests. For those living far away or unable to visit in person, the shrine also offers services for receiving prayers via mail.

When visiting, it is customary to perform the purification ritual at the Temizuya. At the main altar, the standard way to pray is the 'two bows, two claps, and one bow' method. The amulet office (Shofusa-jojo) is open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, while prayer services (Kito) are available from 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM. Please allow extra time for your visit, as ritual ceremonies may cause delays. Please note that cash is the primary method of payment for all offerings and charms.
