Guide
Omogake Valley is one of the largest valleys in Shikoku, situated at the southern foot of Mt. Ishizuchi in Kumakogen Town, Nue District, Ehime Prefecture. As a designated National Scenic Spot, it is renowned for its untouched, pristine natural beauty. The most striking feature is the crystal-clear, emerald green stream surrounded by rugged cliffs and a variety of beautiful waterfalls. It is a beloved destination for travelers seeking to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life and reconnect with the raw power of nature.
Located at the base of Mt. Ishizuchi—the highest peak in Western Japan—this area has long been deeply connected to nature worship and the surrounding environment. The landscape of Omog㌍ake Valley is a masterpiece sculpted by the flow of water and rock over countless years, and its value is officially recognized as a National Scenic Spot. This location serves not just as a tourist destination, but as a vital piece of the region's natural heritage.

There are two primary routes to enjoy the natural beauty of Omogake Valley from different perspectives. The first is the "Main Stream Route," which takes you past Goshikohara, Momijikohara, and the powerful Toragatakitaki waterfall. This route is characterized by its dynamic water flow and diverse terrain. The second is the "Teppoishi River Route," which offers a more tranquil atmosphere. This path allows for a gentle stroll along the river, making it ideal for those seeking peace and quiet. Because the color of the water and the surrounding vegetation change with the seasons, the valley presents a completely different face every time you visit.
While Omogake Valley is beautiful year-round, the seasons of spring, summer, and autumn are particularly recommended. In spring, you can witness the vibrant emergence of fresh greenery creating lush tunnels of life. In summer, the cool river currents and shaded areas make it an excellent retreat from the heat. The most spectacular season, however, is autumn. From late October to early November, the surrounding trees turn brilliant shades of yellow, orange, and red, creating a stunning contrast against the emerald green water. The autumn foliage here is truly a sight to behold.

The main activities here are hiking and nature walks. By walking along the well-maintained paths, you can listen to the soothing sound of the stream and refresh your mind and body with the crisp, clean air. The area is also highly photogenic, offering numerous opportunities to capture beautiful waterfalls, rocky landscapes, and seasonal colors with your camera. Taking the time to observe the water's transparency and the unique rock formations is a truly luxurious way to spend your time.
The drive to Omogake Valley is part of the experience, with scenic routes like the Ishizuchi Skyline offering grand views of nature through your car window. The surrounding Kumakogen area is also rich in nature, with various spots for camping, mountain climbing, and hot spring (onsen) facilities. Enjoying local specialties, such as citrus fruits or dishes made with local ingredients during your drive, is another wonderful way to enjoy the area.
As this is a natural valley, comfortable clothing and sturdy footwear (such as sneakers or trekking shoes) are essential. Because paths can be wet or rocky, non-slip shoes are highly recommended.
