Located in the rolling hills of Tobe Town, Ehime Prefecture, Nanao Baien is a premier destination for enjoying the elegance of plum blossoms in a lush, natural setting. The expansive 7-hectare site is home to approximately 16,000 plum trees representing about 30 different varieties. During the peak blooming season, the mountainside is transformed into a vibrant tapestry of red, pink, and white blossoms, creating a breathtaking landscape. It is a place where you can truly feel the arrival of spring through the sight of the flowers and the melodious singing of the bush warbler.
Nanao Baien is deeply connected to the local natural environment and has nurtured a rich cultural tradition over many years. Every year, the "Nanao Plum Festival" is held to coincide with the blooming season, serving as a cherished local tradition. The site is more than just a scenic viewpoint; it functions as a vibrant community hub where visitors can interact with locals and enjoy products related to the region's famous plum-growing culture and local agricultural specialties.
The primary attraction is the spectacular view of the plum blossoms covering the entire hillside. The way the different colors and shapes of the various species decorate the mountain is truly magnificent. There is an observation deck on-site that offers a sweeping view of the entire plum grove. Depending on the season, you may also enjoy the beautiful color contrast between the plum blossoms and the yellow rapeseed flowers. Additionally, the local stalls offer a variety of processed plum products and seasonal local treats.
The most spectacular scenery can be found from late February to early March. During this period, the "Nanao Plum Festival" is held, providing a lively and festive atmosphere for tourists. If you prefer a more tranquil stroll to avoid the crowds, visiting on a weekday morning is highly recommended. Since the area becomes quite busy on weekends and during festival days, please plan your visit with plenty of time to enjoy the atmosphere.
The main activity at the grove is a peaceful stroll while admiring the exquisite plum blossoms. Walking along the paths allows you to enjoy photography and soak in the seasonal scenery. During the festival period, the onsite stalls become a highlight, selling various plum-related products such as pickled plums (umeboshi), plum syrup, and plum liqueur, as well as local jams, pickles, and daifuku (mochi) made by local farmers. This offers a wonderful opportunity to taste the authentic flavors of the region.
The area around Nanao Baien is dotted with other spots perfect for enjoying nature. For instance, within a 1.5km to 1.7km radius, you can find facilities like Oya Pond and Ehime Forest Park. These are excellent additions to a half-day or full-day itinerary for families and nature lovers. Additionally, Tobe Town is well-known for its traditional crafts, making it an ideal area for travelers seeking cultural experiences.
As the grove is located in a mountainous area with slopes, stairs, and walking paths, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. It is also wise to bring a light jacket or extra layer to prepare for temperature changes in early spring. For purchases at the stalls or during the festival, please carry cash, as it ensures smoother transactions.
