Guide
Nakatsunai Art Village is a cultural landmark in Nakatsunai, Hokkaido, operated by the renowned confectionary brand Rokatei. It is celebrated as a space where nature and art seamlessly blend, featuring seasonal gardens and specialized art galleries. The facility is also recognized by the Japan Corporate Mecenat Association for its contribution to local culture.
Established under the philosophy of Rokkatei, a leading Hokkaido confectionery company, the village serves to promote art and culture. It utilizes the stunning natural environment of Nakatsunai to share the region's charm through artistic expression. Every element, from the garden design to the art collections, reflects a deep harmony with the local landscape.
The village is divided into several unique areas. The Masami Mano Art Gallery showcases the unique artistic world of Masami Mano, including illustrations for the children's poetry magazine "Sairo." Another highlight is the Nakatsunai Art Village Garden, which features four distinct themed gardens with plants adapted to the cool climate, offering a changing landscape throughout the seasons. You will also find various sculptures nestled within the greenery, creating a beautiful dialogue between art and nature.
The facility is open from late April to late October. The opening hours vary by month: during April, May, August, and September, it is open from 10:00 to 16:00. In June and July, the facility opens earlier at 09:00. In October, the closing time is 15:00. Please note that from Tuesday to Friday, only the museum and gardens are open. The changing flora and the way light hits the gardens make every visit a unique experience.
Visitors can enjoy strolling through themed gardens and discovering sculptures placed naturally throughout the grounds. The site also houses Restaurant Poroshiri, which operates only on Saturdays, Sundays, Mondays, and public holidays. The restaurant uses a ticket-based system with service from 11:00 to 15:00 (last order at 14:30). We recommend checking the specific operating days before your visit.
Nearby, you can find "Rokka no Mori," another facility managed by Rokkatei. You can visit both locations using an annual pass that covers both the Nakatsunai Art Village (paid zone) and Rokka no Mori. The area is surrounded by vast natural landscapes, making it a perfect part of a Hokkaido road trip via the Nakatsunai Interchange.
As the site includes extensive gardens and outdoor exhibitions, comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended. Please prepare cash for purchasing tickets and restaurant food tickets. For Restaurant Poroshiri, tickets should be purchased between 10:45 and 14:30. English-language signage and information are limited throughout the facility. Access to the gardens and museum requires a specific admission ticket.
