Mount Moiwa is a 531-meter peak located southwest of central Sapporo. Situated approximately 6 km from Sapporo Station, it is easily accessible from the city center. The summit features an observation deck that provides a vast panoramic view stretching from the Ishikari Plain to the Ishikari coastline. Its night view is celebrated as one of the "Top Three Night Views in Hokkaido," alongside Hakodate and Mt. Tengu in Otaru, and is officially recognized as one of Japan's "Top 100 Night Views." The site is well-equipped with a ropeway and a mini cable car, allowing visitors to enjoy both natural beauty and urban scenery simultaneously.
The development of Mount Moiwa as a tourist destination dates back to the 1950s. In 1957, efforts began to establish a ropeway and a tourist road to the summit to promote regional tourism. By July 1958, a motor road from Kitaisawa to the summit was opened. In the past, the base of the mountain featured an amusement park called "Moiwa Dreamland," which included attractions like roller coasters and Ferris wheels before closing in 1977. Additionally, due to its 531-meter elevation, May 31st is celebrated locally as "Mount Moiwa Day," often marked by community-related events.
The greatest draw is the view from the summit observatory. Visitors can witness the vastness of the Ishikari Plain and the distant coastline of Ishikari Bay. At night, the sparkling lights of the Sapporo metropolitan area create a stunning landscape. The journey to the top is an experience in itself, involving a transfer between the ropeway and the "Moris Car" (a mini cable car). The Moris Car uses a Swiss-made cabin and functions as a funicular, traveling approximately 230 meters from the mid-station to the summit. The changing natural scenery throughout the seasons also adds to the mountain's charm.
Mount Moiwa reveals different faces depending on the season. During the summer season (April to November), operating hours are from 10:30 to 22:00. During the winter season (December to March), hours are from 11:00 to 22:00. The best time to visit is during twilight or evening to watch the colors change as the sun sets. Note that extended hours may be available during Golden Week and weekends in August. Because visibility can be affected by weather conditions, it is a good idea to check the forecast before your visit.
There are two main ways to reach the summit: using the developed facilities or via hiking trails through nature. The ropeway and mini cable car provide a smooth, effortless ascent to the high altitude. For those seeking a more active experience, there are five nature trails designed for learning about the local environment. At the summit, visitors can enjoy the observatory views or observe the seasonal flora and fauna. Additionally, the southeast side of the summit features the Sapporo Moiwa Ski Area, providing a winter sports environment during the snowy season.
