Koizumi Beach is located in Nakajima, Motoyoshi-cho, Kesennuma City, Miyagi Prefecture. After a period of closure following the Great East Japan Earthquake, the beach officially reopened for summer operations in 2019. The coastline is characterized by a shallow topography, creating a calm and safe environment with gentle waves. The landscape features beautiful sand dunes and sandy shores, and during the summer season, lifeguards are stationed on-site during designated swimming hours to ensure visitor safety.
Due to the impact of the Great East Japan Earthquake, the beach's functions were temporarily suspended. However, as part of the regional reconstruction efforts, it has been reopened as a premier destination for recreation that utilizes the area's natural environment. Rooted in the culture of living in harmony with the rich seas of Kesennuma, the beach serves as a seasonal hub for marine-based leisure and community-driven tourism.
The defining feature of Koizumi Beach is its unique topography. The shallow coastline makes it less susceptible to heavy wave impact, making it an excellent environment for various seaside activities. Additionally, the area is a known spot for marine sports such as surfing and Stand-Up Paddleboarding (SUP), depending on the wave conditions. During the peak summer season, temporary shops and facilities are set up to support visitors enjoying the seaside atmosphere.
The main swimming season runs from June to August. Designated swimming hours are from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, during which time lifeguards are on duty. Mornings are generally calmer and more peaceful, while the afternoon can bring intense sunlight, making sun protection and heatstroke prevention essential. For enthusiasts of surfing and other water sports, the best time to visit may vary depending on the season and specific wave conditions.
Beyond standard swimming, the area around the coast is a popular spot for marine sports like surfing and SUP. Visitors can enjoy various ocean-based recreations while keeping an eye on the waves and tides. The environment is particularly well-suited for families, offering a relaxing space for beach leisure and seaside rest.
Koizumi Beach is nestled within the Koizumi district, surrounded by the abundant nature of the Sanriku Coast. The surrounding area features various accommodations and restaurants that serve local specialties such as Kesennuma oysters and skipjack tuna, allowing visitors to experience the local food culture alongside their beach activities. Access to the area is also supported by the BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) system, which is part of the regional tourism network.
When visiting the beach, please bring a swimsuit, a change of clothes, a towel, sunscreen, and sandals. Swimming is permitted between 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM, and it is fundamental to follow the instructions of the lifeguards. Please note that cash is required for purchases at local stalls or temporary shops. English-language support and signage may be limited, so it is recommended to check local information in advance. Parking is available in both paved and unpaved areas, with space also provided for large buses.
