Kiyotsu Gorge is a magnificent canyon formed by the Kiyotsu River, spanning the towns of Tokamachi and Yuzawa in Niigata Prefecture. Recognized as one of Japan's three great gorges, it is also designated as a national scenic spot and a natural monument. The most iconic feature is the Kiyotsu Gorge Tunnel, approximately 750 meters long. This tunnel was transformed during the 2018 Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale by the renowned Chinese architectural group MAD Architects (Ma Yansong). The result is a unique space where the raw power of nature and sophisticated modern architecture blend seamlessly.
The geological history of Kiyotsu Gorge is truly epic. The landscape was shaped by volcanic activity approximately 15 million years ago, followed by the intrusion of magma about 7 million years ago, which created the distinctive columnar jointing seen in the rock faces. Over time, the erosive power of the Kiyotsu River carved the deep valley seen today. Historically, the region has been cherished for its hot springs, with the nearby Koide Onsen dating back to 1801. The name 'Kiyotsu Gorge' was officially established in 1934, recognizing its immense academic and aesthetic value.
The absolute highlight is the interior of the Kiyotsu Gorge Tunnel. Near the exit, you will find the famous "Water Mirror" area. Here, the reflection of the surrounding rock walls and light displays creates an illusion of infinite space, making it a dream for photographers. The tunnel's architecture itself is a work of art, designed with the elemental themes of wood, earth, metal, fire, and water. The changing facial expressions of the gorge throughout the seasons offer a constantly evolving spectacle.
Kiyotsu Gorge reveals a completely different character depending on when you visit. In early May, you can enjoy the lush greenery of spring. From late October to early November, the gorge is draped in vibrant autumn colors. From late December to early April, the landscape is transformed into a serene white winter wonderland. The autumn foliage and winter snowscapes are particularly popular, so we highly recommend checking local conditions before your visit. Please note that the site may close during winter due to heavy snowfall.
