Kiro San Observatory Park is a scenic park located at an altitude of 301.1m at the southern tip of Oshima Island in Imabari City, Ehime Prefecture. Situated within the Setonaikai National Park, it is one of the most iconic sightseeing spots in the region, offering breathtaking views of the Shimanami Kaido. The highlight of the park is the 'Panorama Observatory Bridge,' designed by the world-renowned architect Kengo Kuma. The name 'Kiro San' (Kiro Mountain) is rooted in a legend dating back approximately 1,300 years. It is said that a traveling monk encountered a giant turtle carrying a golden Kannon statue in a coastal cave. A temple was subsequently built on the mountain with that Kannon statue as its main deity. This region has historically served as a vital maritime transport hub, fostering a deep connection between nature and human-led seafaring. The current observatory also embodies a modern cultural legacy; the architecture follows the concept of 'architecture that yields to nature,' designed to respect and blend seamlessly into the local topography.
