Kirishima Art no Mori is a contemporary open-air museum situated on a plateau at an altitude of 700 meters on the slopes of Mount Kurino in northern Kagoshima Prefecture. Opened in October 2000, its greatest appeal is the ability to appreciate original works by both Japanese and international artists that are thoughtfully placed to harmonize with the natural scenery of Kirishima. The vast grounds feature lawn areas, forest zones, and an indoor exhibition facility called the Art Hall, allowing visitors to experience contemporary art in the heart of nature.
This facility was established as a hub for artistic exchange in Kagoshima. The works on display are original pieces conceived by artists active both in Japan and abroad, who have deeply understood the local landscape, history, and culture to create pieces that reflect the essence of this land. Rather than a simple exhibition space, it serves as a center for cultural exchange, bringing the excitement and depth of contemporary art to a wider audience.
The park features more than 20 permanent outdoor works by domestic and international artists. Most pieces are designed to integrate seamlessly with the natural topography and vegetation, offering a different visual experience depending on the season. For example, you can experience the contrast between sculptures nestled in natural forests and those standing on wide-open lawns. Additionally, the indoor 'Art Hall' hosts various collection exhibitions and special themed exhibitions, offering a closer look at the diversity of contemporary art through various materials and mediums.
Kirishima Art no Mori is a destination where the scenery changes beautifully with each season. From spring to summer, it is an ideal spot to stroll through the expansive lawn areas under a clear blue sky while viewing brightly colored artworks. From July 20th to August 31st, the museum offers extended hours until 19:00 on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays. This allows you to witness the changing expressions of the art under the soft light of dusk. Please note that the final entry is 30 minutes before closing time, so please plan your visit accordingly.
Visitors can observe the works up close and even touch many of them. Many of the outdoor sculptures are designed to be tactile, providing a sensory experience through touch as well as sight. The Art Hall also hosts various events, such as workshops for children and lectures, creating an environment where people of all ages can engage with art. Walking through the natural surroundings offers a perfect opportunity for relaxation and mindfulness.
The facility is located approximately a 35-minute drive from Kagoshima Airport, making it an excellent destination for a scenic drive. The surrounding area is characterized by the breathtaking natural views of the Kirishima mountain range, and historical sites like Kirishima Jingu Shrine are also located in the vicinity. If you are using public transportation, you can take a community bus from Kurino Station on the JR Hisatsu Line.
Since the park covers a vast area and much of the experience involves walking outdoors, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Please prepare clothing suitable for the season and the highland climate. Cashless payments are accepted on-site. When viewing the art, please observe all posted rules and maintain proper etiquette to preserve the works. Please note that exhibition details and events may vary depending on the season.
