Kawagoe Matsuri Kaikan is a local museum located in Kawagoe City, Saitama Prefecture. Opened on September 28, 2003, the facility was established to preserve and showcase materials related to the Kawagoe Hikawa Matsuri, which is designated as a National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property. The building itself reflects the local heritage, utilizing the traditional 'Kura-zukuri' (warehouse-style) architectural design. Inside, visitors can immerse themselves in the energy of the Kawagoi Matsuri, a festival boasting approximately 370 years of history, while learning about its background and preparations.
The Kawagoe Matsuri is renowned as one of the three major festivals in the Kanto region. This facility serves as a vital center for passing these traditions down to future generations. Through various exhibits, visitors can explore the evolution of the festival, the significance of the 'Kikuyari' (chanting), the traditional music (Hayashi), and the cultural rituals involved in the festival preparations. The museum also showcases the essence of Edo-period culture, playing a crucial role in preserving the historical value of the Kawagoe region.
The center's most striking exhibit is the display of authentic festival floats (dashi) used in actual processions. Two massive floats are displayed on a rotating basis, allowing visitors to observe their heavy, intricate craftsmanship up close. The absolute highlight is the immersive three-sided screen measuring 4.7m x 8.7m. This high-definition video, lasting about 8 minutes, captures the intense energy of the festival day, making you feel as if you are standing in the heart of the celebration. Additionally, the museum features displays of traditional costumes and live demonstrations of festival music.
The museum is open year-round, but closing times vary by season. From April to September, the facility closes at 6:30 PM, and from October to March, it closes at 5:30 PM. For a more vibrant experience, visit on Sundays or public holidays when live 'Hayashi' (traditional music) performances are held twice daily—at 1:30 PM and 2:30 PM—allowing you to enjoy the festive atmosphere through sound.
The museum utilizes digital technology to enhance the visitor experience. Beyond the immersive three-sided screen, visitors can gain a multi-dimensional understanding of the festival through archival footage and interviews with local participants. To better serve international visitors, the museum has introduced audio guides to ensure a smooth and educational experience for everyone.
Kawagoe Matsuri Kaikan is situated in a prime area surrounded by major sightseeing spots. Within walking distance, you can visit the iconic 'Toki no Kane' (Bell of Time), the charming 'K菓子屋横丁' (Kashiya Yokocho/Candy Alley) for street food, and the historic 'Kura-zukuri' streetscapes. It is also located near the Kawagoe City Museum, Kawagoe City Art Museum, and the Kawagoe Castle Honmaru Palace, making it an ideal part of a cultural-themed walking tour.
