Itoyama Observatory is a premier viewing facility located along the Shimanami Kaido in Imabari City, Ehima Prefecture. From this vantage point, you can enjoy a 360-degree view of the Kurushima Kaikyo Bridge, the scattered islands of the Seto Inland Sea, and the various vessels navigating the strait. Because it sits at a higher elevation than the adjacent Kurushima Kaikyo Observatory, it provides an even more expansive and unobstructed view of the landscape. It is also a highly accessible spot for cyclists, located near Sunrise Itoyama, a major hub on the Shimanami Kaido cycling route.
This region has long been known as a vital maritime gateway. Historically, the area was controlled by the Murakami Kaizoku (pirate clans/naval forces) from the Kamakura period through the Nanboku-cho and Muromachi periods. In more recent history, red lighthouses were established to ensure maritime safety from the Meiji era through the Showa 50s (1970s). Today, the surrounding facilities serve to preserve local heritage, featuring exhibits on the engineering-marvel of the Kurushima Kaikyo Bridge and materials that convey the unique geographical and cultural history of the region.
The primary highlight of Itoyama Observatory is the breathtaking view of the Kurushima Kaikyo Bridge directly ahead. The panorama captures the unique beauty of the many islands in the Seto Inland Sea, the complex currents of the strait, and the movement of large ships. The 360-degree unobstructed view allows visitors to clearly see the arrangement of the surrounding islands. Nearby, you can also find monuments such as the "To the Sea" statue by Kaito Takashina, poetry monuments by Ujo Noguchi, and other stone inscriptions detailing the area's history.
The scenery changes beautifully depending on the time of day and weather. In the early morning, you may witness sea mists or a stunning sunrise over the ocean. During the daytime, the view is lively with ships navigating the Kurushima Kaikyo and cyclists crossing the bridge. At night, the landscape is illuminated by the lights of passing ships and nearby lighthouses. Please note that specific facility hours may vary by season, so please check local signage upon arrival.
Beyond sightseeing, the area serves as a popular spot for cyclists to rest and gather information. Sunrise Itoyama, located nearby, functions as a rental cycle hub, making this a natural stopping point for travelers. Visitors are encouraged to use binoculars to observe the distant islands and maritime activity in detail. Additionally, the nearby Kurushima Kaikyo Observatory features exhibition rooms for educational purposes and shops where you can purchase local specialties such as citrus fruits and Imabari towels.
Directly adjacent to the observatory is the Kurushima Kaikyo Observatory, which features an exhibition hall showcasing bridge-building technology, a shop, and restroom facilities. The area is well-equipped with parking lots. Other nearby landmarks include the Taisho-so traditional inn and Sunrise Itoyama, as well as Shimoda Water Port, which serves as a starting point for rapid current cruises toward Oshima Island.
For purchases at nearby shops or facilities, both cash and credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, etc.) are generally accepted. However, please check local signage for the outdoor viewing area specifically.
The nearby Kurushima Kaikyo Observatory often provides English language signage, exhibits, and may have staff capable of providing assistance in English.
No prior reservation is required to access the observatory area.
The outdoor viewing area is highly exposed to wind, so it is highly recommended to wear windproof clothing. Bringing binoculars is also suggested for a better view of the distant islands and ships.
Photography is permitted; however, please follow local rules regarding the use of tripods or commercial photography.
While the nearby Kurushima Kaikyo Observatory offers wheelchair-accessible parking, please be aware that the paths leading to the Itoyama Observatory itself may include slopes or stairs.
To preserve the natural environment, please take your trash home with you and avoid eating or resting in non-designated areas.
