Chugu Jojusha is a sacred shrine located on the mid-slopes of Mt. Ishizuchi (at an altitude of approximately 1,400m) in Saijo City, Ehime Prefecture. As one of the four key shrines of the Ishizuchi Shrine complex, it plays a crucial role as a spiritual base for those climbing the mountain. The shrine is situated about a 20 to 25-minute walk from the Ishizuchi Mountain Ropeway's Summit Station, making it a well-known stop for both hikers and pilgrims.
The name "Jojusha" (meaning 'Shrine of Accomplishment') is rooted in legends involving Japanese mythology and Shugendo (asceticism). Legend has it that when the ascetic Yakunogyoja was practicing on Mt. Ishizuchi, he encountered an elderly man who was performing the miraculous feat of sharpening an axe to turn it into a needle. Inspired by this encounter, Yakunogyoja eventually paved the way for the spiritual opening of Mt. Ishizuchi, the highest peak in Western Japan. Because this was a place where wishes were fulfilled, the name Jojusha became established. The shrine features the "Mikaeri Yo-haiden" (Viewing Hall), where it is said Yakunogyoja looked up at the summit to confirm his spiritual success.
Jojusha offers a serene atmosphere surrounded by untouched nature. Visitors can explore historical structures and enjoy the breathtaking scenery of Mt. Ishizuchi. The site is particularly significant as a place of spiritual fulfillment due to its connection to the Yakunogyoja legend. The surrounding mountain topography and lush vegetation beautifully showcase the rugged beauty of the Ishizuchi range.
While the shrine offers different charms throughout the year, the winter scenery is especially striking. This area of Ehime is known for heavy snowfall, and visiting in January or February allows you to experience the shrine draped in white. From October to November, the area is adorned with vibrant autumn foliage. If you plan to hike, it is essential to check the seasonal road conditions and weather before visiting.
The shrine serves as a resting point and a place for prayer during the ascent of Mt. Ishizuchi. After taking the Ishizuchi Mountain Ropeway to the summit area, you can enjoy a scenic walk or hike to reach the shrine. You can also experience traditional Japanese religious practices through various annual ceremonies and festivals, such as the New Year's visits (Hatsumode) or the mountain opening ceremonies.
Jojusha is part of the hiking route that begins near the Ishizuchi Mountain Ropeway Summit Station. It is located near the "Togoya Haiden" and forms part of the essential climbing route for those ascending Mt. Ishizuchi. The surrounding Saijo and Kumakogen areas offer vast, beautiful natural landscapes.
Due to the 1,400m altitude, temperatures are significantly lower than at sea level, and weather can change rapidly. Proper hiking gear and warm clothing are essential. Please respect the sacred atmosphere of the shrine.
