Horie Beach is a nature-rich coastline located in the Horie district of Matsuyama City, Ehime Prefecture. It holds the highest 'AA' rating in water quality surveys by the Ministry of the Environment, boasting exceptionally clean and transparent waters. The well-maintained sandy beach draws many visitors during the summer season. It is an ideal place to relax amidst the gentle waves of the Seto Inland Sea and the surrounding mountain scenery.
This region has a long history as a vital maritime hub, where sea-based culture has thrived for centuries. While there are several theories regarding the origin of the place name, one theory suggests it is linked to Kono Michitaka, who ruled this land during the late Muromachi period. Historically, the area is also home to the 'Hidden Christian Graves' discovered in 1975, which tell the story of those who preserved their faith in secret. Today, the beach is maintained through local volunteer efforts, fostering a strong sense of community connection.
The greatest attraction is the stunning color gradation of the sea, shifting from emerald green to deep blue. Thanks to the exceptional water quality, you can truly enjoy the crystal-clear visibility. The sandy shore extends 820m alongside the adjacent Waki Coast, making for a wonderful coastal stroll. At dusk, the sky transforms into a beautiful gradient of pink and blue, creating a serene landscape against the silhouettes of the mountains.
The beach is officially open for swimming from early July to late August each year. This is the best time to enjoy the bright blue ocean under clear skies. While daytime is perfect for swimming, the 'magic hour' at sunset offers a breathtaking view as the sky changes colors. Depending on the season, you may also enjoy local events or exhibitions at nearby facilities.
During the summer, activities center around swimming in the well-maintained sandy area and seaside relaxation. The nearby 'Matsuyama Horie Sea Station Umiterrace' often hosts local events and flea markets. You can also enjoy a peaceful walk through the nearby Horie Shinike Shinsui Park to connect with nature. Please note that barbecues and fireworks are permitted as long as you follow local rules and maintain cleanliness.
The surrounding area is dotted with spots where you can feel history and nature. For instance, in spring, you can enjoy the cherry blossom trees along the Goya River. As the region has a deep-rooted hot spring culture, facilities like Gongen Onsen are nearby, allowing you to enjoy both the sea and the healing waters. The historical 'Hidden Christian Graves' are also a significant local landmark.
Please prepare swimwear, towels, hats, and sunscreen to protect against the sun. While foot baths and public restrooms are available, please remember that you must take all your trash home with you.
