Hoheikyo Dam is a vital multi-purpose dam that supports water supply, flood control, and power generation for the Sapporo area. Surrounded by deep forests and rugged mountains, the landscape—where the clear blue reservoir meets massive concrete structures—is a magnificent display of nature and engineering in harmony. The area is officially recognized as one of the '100 Selected Water Source Forests' and '100 Selected Dam Lakes' by the Forestry Agency, making it a premier spot to experience the abundant natural beauty of Hokkaido.
Construction of the dam began in 1967, and it was completed in October 1972. The dam plays a crucial role in preventing floods in Sapporo and generating electricity using the waters of the Toyohira River. It is a vital piece of infrastructure supporting the water needs of the Sapporo metropolitan area. The history of the region is also deeply tied to the Ainu culture, with the name of the area being linked to the Ainu word 'Sapporo-pets,' meaning 'the dry, large river.'
One of the most thrilling attractions is the dynamic 'Sightseeing Water Discharge.' Occurring from April to October, this event offers a rare chance to witness the sheer power of the water up close. The striking contrast between the blue reservoir and the surrounding greenery is a sight to behold. From the dam crest and the surrounding walking paths, you can observe the massive scale of the structure, which is truly awe-inspiring.
Hoheikyo Dam reveals a different face in every season. In spring, you can see the melting snow feeding the river, while summer brings a lush, deep green canopy over the reservoir. Autumn is particularly spectacular, as the surrounding foliage turns vibrant colors, creating a breathtaking view of the dam nestled in autumn leaves. Since the sightseeing water discharge is held from April to October, visiting during this window allows you to see the most dynamic water movements. We recommend checking the electric bus schedules and discharge times before your visit.
You can enjoy the scenery of the surrounding nature while riding an electric bus. The distance from the parking lot to the dam site is approximately 2 km (about a 20–30 minute walk), but the electric bus can take you there in just 7–8 minutes. Depending on the season, a lift car may also be operational, offering elevated views of the landscape. At the Dam Information Center, you can explore exhibits about the dam and collect the exclusive 'Dam Card' available only here.
Located near the dam is the famous 'Hoheikyo Onsen,' a hot spring surrounded by rich nature. After your visit to the dam, you can unwind in the hot springs and enjoy the area's famous curry. The surrounding area, including spots like the Kudan Falls, makes this a wonderful base for nature walks and exploration.
As the area is located in a natural environment, comfortable walking shoes and clothing suitable for weather changes are highly recommended. Please note that payments for the electric bus, Dam Cards, or hot spring services are primarily handled in cash. If you are traveling with pets, they must be kept in a cage while riding the bus and kept on a leash while in the park area. To preserve the environment, please take your trash home with you. Additionally, please check for any temporary closures of walking paths due to potential rockfalls before your visit.
