Hirayu Otaki Falls is a magnificent waterfall located in the Okuhida Onsen village of Takayama, Gifu Prefecture. Standing at a height of 64 meters with a width of approximately 6 meters, it is celebrated as one of the "Top 100 Waterfalls in Japan" and is a signature natural landmark of the Hida region. The falls offer a different face to visitors with every season. In summer and autumn, visitors can enjoy the refreshing sound of rushing water against lush greenery, while in winter, the falls transform into a stunning frozen icefall, creating a magical atmosphere that captivates all who visit.
The area is steeped in local legend involving a Sengoku-period warlord. It is said that during a military campaign through the Hida region, the forces of Yamagata Masakage (a vassal of Takeda Shingen) were exhausted by the steep mountain passes and the sulfurous gases from Mt. Ryokugatake. A white monkey appeared and guided the weary soldiers to a hot spring, which is believed to be the origin of the nearby Hirayu Onsen. This legend beautifully intertwines the natural wonders of the area with its historical roots.
The primary draw is the powerful, vertical flow of water. The sheer scale of the falls provides a dramatic spectacle that changes with the seasons. A particularly spectacular sight occurs in February, when the waterfall freezes into a massive ice structure known as an "icefall." During this time, the "Hirayu Otaki Ice Festival" is held, featuring beautiful light-up displays that illuminate the frozen formations, creating a truly ethereal and dreamlike landscape.
While the falls can be enjoyed year-round, each season offers a unique experience. Spring and summer are perfect for enjoying the fresh, rhythmic water flow amidst vibrant greenery. Autumn is highly recommended for the stunning contrast between the white water and the colorful fall foliage. The area surrounding the falls is developed as Hirayu Otaki Park, allowing for peaceful walks through nature. There is a walking path of approximately 0.7 km from the parking area to the viewpoint, where you can listen to the soothing sounds of the forest. During the winter festival, the experience is even more special, often combining the illuminated icefall with beautiful fireworks displays.
The falls are located in the heart of the Okuhida Onsen area, a famous hot spring destination. Nearby facilities include Hirayu Onsen, Hirayu Campground, and the Hirayu Bus Terminal, making it a convenient base for your travels. As part of the Chubu Sangaku National Park, the area offers breathtaking views of the Northern Japanese Alps. A popular way to end your visit is to relax in a nearby hot spring or footbath.
As this is a natural site, please prepare according to the season. In summer and autumn, comfortable walking shoes are recommended. However, if visiting in winter, heavy winter clothing and non-slip, waterproof boots are absolutely essential due to icy paths and heavy snow.
