Kaizan Park is situated near the summit of Mt. Kaizan (149m elevation) on the northern side of Hakata Island in Imabari City, Ehime Prefecture. As part of the Seto Inland Sea National Park, the area is surrounded by rich, untouched nature. The primary attraction is the panoramic view from the summit observation deck. From this vantage point, visitors can see three major bridges spanning the sea: the Tarara Bridge, the Omishima Bridge, and the Hakata-Oshima Bridge. In spring, the entire mountain is transformed into a sea of pink as approximately 1,000 cherry trees bloom in full splendor.
The history of this area dates back to the Meiji era. The name "Kaizan" (meaning mountain opening/cultivation) originates from the large-scale land reclamation projects led by Shinkichi Magoshi, who invested his personal fortune to promote local industry and expand arable land. Following this, the area saw the cultivation of pyrethrum flowers during the Meiji and Taisho eras. In 1953, donations were made to plant cherry trees, and by 1956, the area was designated as a National Park. In 1989, the area was revitalized as "Kaizan Flower Park," and today, with its well-maintained observation decks, walking paths, and rest areas, it serves as a premier destination for nature lovers.
The highlight of the park is undoubtedly the view from the observation deck. You can witness the beautiful silhouettes of the islands in the Seto Inland Sea connected by magnificent bridges. During the spring season, the landscape is blanketly covered in a soft pink haze from roughly 1,000 Somei Yoshino cherry trees. During this peak time, the atmosphere becomes even more magical with the installation of traditional lanterns for night viewing and various food stalls selling local treats like oden. Even outside of the cherry blossom season, the park offers seasonal beauty, such as colorful azaleas blooming in the warmer months.
The most vibrant time to visit is during the cherry blossom season from March to April. During this period, you can experience not only the daytime scenery but also the enchanting night views illuminated by lanterns. While the park is open 24 hours a day, we recommend visiting during daylight hours for the best visibility or during the evening if you wish to see the light-up events. Please note that seasonal events and illumination schedules may change based on weather and local conditions.
Kaizan Park is an excellent destination for families and cyclists alike. The park features play areas with equipment such as a 36-meter slide and jungle gyms, allowing children to enjoy playing in nature. It is also a significant point on the Shimanami Kaido cycling route. Many cyclists use the park as a rest stop to recharge while enjoying the scenery. Whether you are taking a leisurely stroll through the mountain paths or enjoying a break from cycling, the park offers a perfect connection to the natural environment.
The area surrounding the park is part of the breathtaking Shimanami Kaido scenic route. A key hub for travelers is the Hakata Rental Cycle (located at the Michi-no-Eki Hakata S・C Park), which is highly recommended for cyclists. The surrounding islands also offer various eateries where you can enjoy fresh seafood from the Seto Inland Sea. You can easily incorporate a visit to Kaizan Park into a travel itinerary involving Hakata Island and Oshima Island via car or bus.
Since the park is located near a mountain summit (149m), we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Please prepare clothing that allows for easy movement when exploring the trails. While the park is a wonderful natural space, please observe public etiquette and ensure you take all your trash home with you. Parking is free of charge, but please be aware that there may be restrictions for large buses during certain peak seasons.
