Higashiyama Sky Tower was established in 1989 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the founding of Nagoya City. Standing at a height of 214m (with the observation room at 180m), it offers one of the most spectacular views in the Tokai region. The tower's 134m structure is surrounded by minimal high-rise buildings, ensuring an unobstructed view of the distant mountains during the day and a dazzling sea of lights at night.
Built in 1989, the tower serves more than just a sightseeing purpose; it also functions as a critical piece of urban infrastructure. It houses a municipal disaster prevention radio relay station, with a radio machine room on the 3rd floor and a parabolic antenna deck between the 3rd and 4th floors. Additionally, the tower works in tandem with the disaster prevention command center, utilizing high-sensitivity cameras to monitor the city 24 hours a day to ensure urban safety.
The 4F observation room is officially recognized as a 'Japan Night View Heritage' site and is included in the '100 Best Night Views in Japan.' Because there are no surrounding obstructions, visitors can enjoy a vast, uninterrupted expanse of city lights.
The tower is a popular romantic destination, featuring the 'Compass of Love' monument. The area is often decorated with heart-shaped charms and decorations, adding a cultural touch to the romantic atmosphere.
At the center of the 4F observation room, you can observe the building's seismic damper system. This technology uses a weight of approximately 20 tons to absorb energy and reduce building sway. Visitors can view the actual mechanism through the glass windows.
As a recognized 'Japan Night View Heritage' site, the time after sunset is the most highly recommended. The beauty of the city lights is truly exceptional.
On clear days, the silhouette of distant mountains, including Mt. Ontake, the Suzuka Mountains, and the Japanese Alps, can be seen from the tower.
Enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view of the entire Nagoya metropolitan area. The scenery changes beautifully depending on the season and weather conditions.
At the 1F entrance, you can find a photo panel featuring 'Noppi,' the official mascot of Nagoya, making for a fun souvenir photo.
Higashiyama Sky Tower is located right next to the popular Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Gardens. It is a short 15-minute walk from the Zoo's Main Gate or a 10-minute walk from the North Gate, making it easy to combine your visit with a trip to the zoo or botanical gardens.
