Higashi Shiio Falls is a grand waterfall with a drop of 85 meters, located in Ajimu Town, Usa City, Oita Prefecture. Because its beauty is said to resemble the famous Kegon Falls in Nikko, it is affectionately known as the 'Kegon of Kyushu' and has been selected as one of Japan's Top 100 Waterfalls. The sight of water rushing down the sheer vertical cliffs is truly overwhelming, filling the air with refreshing negative ions. The view of the valley leading to the basin is exquisite, making it one of the most iconic natural landmarks in Kyushu where you can feel the raw energy of nature.
Since ancient times, this area has been cherished as a sacred site for Kannon (Goddess of Mercy) worship. The combination of the powerful water cascading down the cliffs and the serene natural environment has inspired a sense of awe and reverence in people for centuries. Today, it is preserved not only as a popular tourist destination for enjoying natural aesthetics but also as a precious local natural resource.
Higashi Shiio Falls offers a completely different experience depending on the season. The most recommended times are spring, with its dazzling fresh greenery; summer, when the water sounds refreshing and cool; and autumn, when the entire valley is wrapped in colorful foliage. Visiting during the daytime when sunlight hits the water can create a sparkling, magical effect. Please note that access may be restricted during heavy rain or high water levels, so it is best to check the weather before your visit.

The area around Higashi Shiio Falls is dotted with spots to enjoy the rich nature of Usa City. For example, nearby are the Nishi Shiio Falls and Fukukino Falls, both part of the 'Usa San-taki' (Three Waterfalls of Usa) group. It also makes for a wonderful driving route toward the historic Usa Jingu Shrine, allowing you to plan a trip that combines history and nature.
As this is a natural site, we strongly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes (such as sneakers or trekking shoes). The paths and surfaces can be slippery, especially when wet, so please watch your step. As this is a protected natural area, please follow the etiquette of taking all your trash home and respecting the environment.
