The Yakama Potholes are a collection of unique, hollowed-out rock formations (potholes) found on the riverbed of the Kurokawa River in the Yanadani Valley, Kuma Kogen, Ehime Prefecture. Over many years, the movement of sand and pebbles in the river has sculpted the bedrock into various shapes, creating deep basins that resemble the bottom of a pot. These formations are often given descriptive names based on their shapes, such as "Tunnel Kama" (Tunnel Pot) or "Megane Kama" (Eyeglass Pot). The landscape is characterized by a deep green riverbed and the powerful, rhythmic sound of rushing water, offering a truly immersive experience in nature.
This area is steeped in local legend, with ancient stories suggesting that a Dragon God resides within these waters. There is a traditional tale that during times of drought, when prayers for rain went unanswered, people would cast metal objects into the deep pools to appease the Dragon God. This blend of natural wonder and local folklore adds a layer of mystical charm to the site's atmosphere.
The primary draw is the sheer variety of potholes carved by the relentless force of water. No two holes are exactly alike, allowing visitors to observe a diverse range of natural sculptures. The Yakama Potholes are located in the lush, natural environment of Kuma Kogen. The Yanadani Valley area is perfect for a scenic driving route or a nature-focused day trip, offering many other spots to enjoy the breathtaking landscapes characteristic of Ehime Prefecture.
The walking paths involve steep slopes and can be slippery due to water or wet leaves. The trek involves a descent of approximately 20 minutes to reach the area and a steep ascent of about 30 minutes to return. We highly recommend wearing sturdy, non-slip footwear such as hiking shoes or sneakers.
