Gutei Observatory is located in Samukawa, Shikokuchuo City, Ehime Prefecture, at an altitude of approximately 350 meters. The greatest charm of this location is the overwhelming 180-degree wide-angle panorama. The dynamic night view, created by the calm waters of the Seto Inland Sea, the cityscape of Shikokuchuo, and the distant, glowing industrial clusters of the Iyo-Mishima area, is truly breathtaking. Beyond the night scenery, the daytime offers a grand natural landscape featuring the islands of the Seto Inland Sea and the mountains of Sanuki. Furthermore, during the winter, the area comes alive with seasonal light displays, such as the approximately 100,000 LED lights illuminating the streets near the Mishima-Kawanoe IC.
The observatory was completed in 1961 and has long been cherished as a local landmark for its scenic beauty. Its significance was officially recognized when it was selected as one of the '100 Best Night Views in Japan' in 2004 and as part of the 'Japan Night View Heritage' in 2010. Additionally, in 2012, it was designated as a 'Lover's Sanctuary,' establishing its history as a romantic destination for couples. It stands as a symbol of the coexistence between the region's natural beauty and its industrial heritage.
