Awajiga-to Pass (Awajiga-to) is a mountain located in Hatajima-cho, Matsuyama City, Ehime Prefecture, standing at an elevation of 273 meters. Situated at the edge of the Kanan mountain range, it offers exceptionally wide views for its height due to its proximity to the Matsuyama Plain. The summit is equipped with a small gazebo and an observation deck, allowing visitors to enjoy a panoramic vista of Matsuyama City and the Seto Inland Sea on clear days. It is a cherished local spot, often used as a destination for excursions by local elementary and junior high schools.
The area holds historical significance, with roots tracing back approximately 400 years to a fort associated with Yuzuki Castle (the site of the current Dogo Park). The name "Awaji-yama" or "Awajiga-to Pass" is said to have originated from the name of the fort's lord, Hayashi Awaji-no-kami Michitoki. Interestingly, there is a historical connection to the 11th generation descendant of Michitoki, who was the famous Japanese statesman Ito Hirobumi. The local landscape is so deeply ingrained in the community that the scenery of this mountain is even featured in the school songs of local elementary and junior high schools.
The primary draw is the view from the summit observation deck. Because the surrounding trees have been cleared, the sightlines are unobstructed, providing a high-angle perspective of the sprawling Matsuyama cityscape and the calm, shimmering Seto Inland Sea. There are several hiking routes available, ranging from well-maintained paths to more rugged trails. The established routes feature signposts, log steps, and benches, making it easy to navigate based on topographical maps. The gazebo at the summit serves as a perfect resting spot to enjoy the breeze and the view.
Awajiga-to Pass reveals different charms throughout the seasons. In spring, you can enjoy the beauty of the cherry blossoms planted around the area. In autumn, the mountain becomes a popular spot for viewing vibrant fall foliage. For the best experience, consider visiting during the late afternoon; the changing colors of the sky during sunset create a stunning backdrop to the city lights. Please note that trail conditions can change depending on the season and weather, so checking local conditions is recommended.
The area is ideal for light hiking and walking. There are multiple paths to choose from, including a route ascending from behind Hanatsu-ji Temple and other trails maintained by local residents. For beginners, the ascent is relatively short, taking approximately one hour to reach the summit, making it an accessible outdoor activity. You can also explore the terrain via various routes, including paths near the power transmission towers, offering a diverse walking experience.
The base of the mountain is home to local community hubs like Kuwabara Elementary and Junior High Schools. A hiking route also continues from the rear of Hanatsu-ji Temple, allowing visitors to combine a nature walk with a visit to nearby temples and shrines. Its proximity to central Matsuyama makes it an easy addition to a standard sightseeing itinerary in the city.
Please wear comfortable clothing and sturdy walking shoes suitable for hiking. While the trails are relatively short, some sections may be uneven or lack maintenance, so watch your step. As this is a natural area, please follow local etiquette: always carry your trash back with you and respect the environment. English signage and staff support are limited, so it is highly recommended to check your route in advance. Note that there are no formal parking facilities, so please be mindful of local parking rules when driving.
