The Akita Nairiku Jukan Railway is a local line running north-south through Akita Prefecture, connecting Takanosu Station in Kitaakita City to Kakunodate Station in Semboku City. The train offers more than just transportation; it is a destination in itself. Passengers can gaze out the window at the quintessential Japanese 'Satoyama' landscapes—the beautiful, harmonious coexistence of human life and nature—which change dramatically with every season.
The area along this railway is steeped in diverse historical and cultural heritage. You can experience the elegant Samurai culture found in the Kakunodate area, the traditional Satoyama lifestyle of Nishiki, and the unique Matagi (traditional winter hunter) culture of the Ani region. The area also features remnants of the ancient Jomon culture. These historical elements create a unique and deeply traditional atmosphere that defines the local landscape.
One of the most iconic sights is the Omata River Bridge. Seeing the train cross this striking red bridge over the upper reaches of the Ani River, set against a backdrop of mountains and clear skies, is a dream for many photographers. Occasionally, special themed trains like the 'Akita Jomon-go' are in operation. Additionally, the region is home to historical sites such as the Isedodai Site, which is part of the 'Jomon Prehistoric Sites in Northern Japan' UNESCO World Heritage listing.
The charm of this railway lies in its ever-changing face. In spring, enjoy the vibrant fresh greenery; in summer, the deep lush forests and bright blue skies; in autumn, the mountainsides turn into a sea of fiery colors; and in winter, the landscape transforms into a breathtaking, monochromatic world of white snow. From July to October, you can also enjoy the lively atmosphere of sweetfish (ayu) fishing along the river.
Beyond the train ride, there are many ways to explore the area. For instance, from Aniai Station, you can take a shared taxi to Mt. Moriyoshi (elevation 1,454m). Mt. Moriyoshi is famous for its alpine flowers in spring and summer, and its spectacular 'ice monsters' (frost-covered trees) in winter. A gondola runs from the base to the summit, making the view easily accessible. You can also use the 'Yunukemuri Coupon' to combine your rail journey with visits to local hot spring (onsen) facilities.
At Kakundate Station, you can transfer to the JR East Tazawako Line or the Akita Shinkansen. Takanosu Station provides connections to the JR Ou Main Line. These major stations make it easy to access the railway from within and outside Akita Prefecture. The surrounding areas are filled with deep cultural experiences, from the historic samurai residences to the traditional mountain cultures.
It is essential to check the train timetable in advance, as some services are single-car operations. Please be mindful of passenger etiquette, especially when boarding and exiting. Because the line runs through mountainous terrain, temperatures can drop significantly; please prepare warm, layered clothing, especially during winter.
