Hiraodai Nature Observation Center

Overview

The Hiraodai Nature Observation Center, located in Kokuraminami Ward, Kitakyushu City, is a facility where you can learn about Hiraodai, one of Japan's three major karst plateaus. Hiraodai is said to have formed when limestone deposited on the seabed during the Permian period, approximately 250 million years ago, rose to the surface and was eroded by wind and rain over eons, creating the present-day karst landscape. The center provides detailed explanations of Hiraodai's formation, natural environment, geology, and flora and fauna through panels, dioramas, and specimens. Exhibits on the rare plants and animals inhabiting Hiraodai are particularly stimulating for children's curiosity and offer a valuable opportunity to learn about the importance of nature conservation. The observation deck offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the expansive karst plateau. The contrast between the white limestone bedrock and the lush green grasslands is truly spectacular.
