Oonamiike

Overview

Oonamiike is a crater lake at an altitude of 658m, located within the Kirishima mountain range. Formed approximately 20,000 years ago by volcanic activity, it boasts a circumference of about 4km and a maximum depth of approximately 15m. Surrounded by majestic mountains, the lake's surface is calm and strikingly beautiful, like a mirror reflecting the sky. The scenery is particularly enchanting at dawn and dusk, when the sunlight creates a magical atmosphere on the lake's surface. Oonamiike is one of Kirishima's most celebrated scenic spots, attracting numerous visitors. A well-maintained walking path around the lake allows for a relaxing stroll, providing ample opportunities to appreciate the magnificent views. Camping grounds and onsen (hot spring) facilities are also available in the vicinity, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in nature with an overnight stay. Access to Oonamiike is convenient by car or bus. It's approximately a 30-minute drive from Kirishima IC on the Kyushu Expressway. By bus, take the Makio Line of the Kirishima City community bus and get off at the Oonamiike bus stop. Oonamiike presents a different captivating face with each season. In spring, cherry blossoms paint the lake a vibrant pink. Summer brings lush greenery and refreshing breezes. Autumn transforms the mountains into a kaleidoscope of autumn leaves, reflecting in the waters in shades of red and gold. Winter blankets the landscape in a pristine white wonderland. Oonamiike is a highly recommended tourist spot where you can enjoy the grandeur of nature and a tranquil atmosphere.
