Overview

Nishi-Shiiya Falls, located in Kuju-cho, Kuju-gun, Oita Prefecture, is a majestic waterfall with an 83-meter drop. Once praised as the "greatest waterfall of the west," its appearance has changed somewhat due to large-scale development around the waterfall's base following the construction of the Hininashi Dam. Nevertheless, its grandeur continues to captivate many visitors. From the observation deck near the parking lot, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the upper part of the falls. To see the entire waterfall, descend to the lower observation deck located beside the upper one. While a well-maintained walking path leads to the lower viewpoints, be aware of potentially slippery areas. Selected as one of Japan's Top 100 Waterfalls and often called the most impressive waterfall in Western Japan, Nishi-Shiiya Falls inspires awe and creates unforgettable memories.
