**Important Notice:** The Akashiba Walking Trail is currently closed to visitors until further notice, due to damage caused by heavy rains on August 3, 2022. While the parking lot is available, please be aware there is a height restriction. Since there are very few accommodations, souvenir shops, or restaurants in the surrounding area, we highly recommend you come prepared with all your essentials. As this is a natural environment, please exercise extreme caution regarding bear encounters. Additionally, for your safety, please refrain from taking photos directly from National Route 113 due to heavy traffic and the inherent dangers. We encourage you to enjoy the breathtaking scenery from our designated safe parking areas and observation points.
Akashiba Gorge, located in Oguni Town, Nishiokitama District, Yamagata Prefecture, is a scenic spot that can truly be called a hidden gem, incorporated into a part of Bandai-Asahi National Park. The gorge, carved over many years by the rapids of the Arakawa River through shale and granite, is a work of art in its dynamic topography itself. Especially during the autumn foliage season from late October to early November, when deciduous trees like Japanese maples (yamamomiji), other maples (kaede), and beech trees grow naturally throughout the area, the entire gorge is painted a breathtaking fiery red. It's a sight that clearly explains why it's called 'Japan's Red Cliffs.' Its understated development for tourism is its greatest charm, allowing visitors to fully appreciate its pure, unspoiled natural beauty. The fresh green season is also beautiful; a deep breath amidst the invigorating greenery will refresh both mind and body. Access is convenient along National Route 113, but there are very few accommodations, restaurants, or souvenir shops nearby, so visitors should prepare in advance. Please note that while a walking trail is maintained, there are sections currently impassable due to heavy rain damage on August 3, 2022. It is recommended to check for the latest information before visiting. Due to the rich natural environment, caution is advised regarding bear sightings. Photographing from National Route 113 is extremely dangerous due to heavy traffic. Please return to the parking lot and enjoy the scenery from a safe location.
