Sayama Pond Park

Overview

Sayama Pond Park, located in Osaka-Sayama City, Osaka Prefecture, encompasses Sayama Pond, Japan's oldest dam-style irrigation pond, and its beautifully landscaped surroundings. Built during the early Asuka period by the Imperial Court, the pond is designated as a National Historic Site. Once a crucial water source irrigating 80 villages and approximately 55,000 koku of rice paddies, it now serves as a water source, a flood control measure, and a valuable tourist attraction. The park boasts approximately 1300 cherry trees, making it known as one of the earliest places in Osaka to enjoy cherry blossom viewing, typically starting in late March. During this season, the park teems with visitors, and the area surrounding the pond is awash in pink blossoms. Located on the north side of the pond is the Osaka Prefectural Sayama Pond Museum, where you can delve into the history and culture of Sayama Pond.
