Mamayama Shōfuku-ji Temple is a head temple of the Nichiren sect located in Ichikawa City, Chiba Prefecture. Its origins lie in Kyūhō-ji Temple, established by Gyōki during the Nara period. In the Heian period, Kūkai renovated the temple complex and renamed it Shōfuku-ji. It later converted to Tendai Buddhism, but during the Kamakura period, it embraced Nichiren Buddhism after his teachings.
Following its conversion to Nichiren Buddhism, the temple became a center for spreading Nichiren's teachings, attracting many followers. The grounds feature the Daikokudō hall, housing a Daikokuten statue said to be a true carving by Nichiren, a charming bell tower, and the imposing Niomon gate, all providing a palpable sense of history. In spring, cherry blossoms abound, while autumn brings stunning autumn foliage, allowing visitors to appreciate the harmony of nature throughout the year.
