Ichimai-iwa of Kuzagawa River

Overview

Ichimai-iwa (Single Rock) of Kuzagawa River is a massive single rock formation in Kuzugawa-cho, Wakayama Prefecture, measuring approximately 100 meters high and 500 meters wide. Designated a national natural monument, it's also part of the South Kii Kumano Geopark. Its formation is believed to be the result of a massive volcanic eruption around 15 million years ago. The eruption created a caldera that collapsed, and subsequently, rising magma solidified to form the single rock. Across the Kuzagawa River lies Gokunomoriyama mountain, creating a majestic landscape together with Ichimai-iwa. Gokunomoriyama, towering across from Ichimai-iwa, has an elevation of approximately 500 meters. A mountain trail offers panoramic views of Ichimai-iwa and the Kuzagawa River from the summit. Nearby, you'll find Michi-no-Eki Ichimai-iwa monolith, offering rest areas and dining options. A nearby campground also caters to those seeking an immersive nature experience. The Kuzagawa River, known for its crystal-clear water and excellent water quality, offers activities such as canoeing and rafting.
