Overview

The Wakkanai City Centennial Memorial Tower & Hokpo Memorial Hall was built on July 1, 1978, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Wakkanai City's founding. Located on a hill in Wakkanai Park, it consists of an 80-meter-tall observation tower and a two-story Hokpo Memorial Hall. From the observation deck, you can enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view of the magnificent scenery, including Rishiri Island, Rebun Island, the Soya Strait, and the Sarobetsu Plain. On a clear day, you might even be able to see Karafuto (Sakhalin), formerly part of Japan but ceded to the Soviet Union after World War II. At night, the beautiful cityscape of Wakkanai unfolds before you. The Hokpo Memorial Hall features comprehensive exhibits on the history, culture, and nature of Wakkanai City. Highlights include the history of exchanges with Karafuto (Sakhalin) and exhibits on Ainu culture. The museum explores the history and culture of Karafuto, even though it's no longer Japanese territory, showcasing the ongoing connection. Exhibits on Ainu culture detail their traditional lifestyle, culture, and beliefs.
