The Chojagahara Site in Itoigawa City, Niigata Prefecture, is an important settlement site from the Jomon period known for its production of large jade beads and magatama (curved jade ornaments). This site is one of the largest Jomon period settlements in the Hokuriku region, believed to have flourished most during the middle Jomon period, between 4500 and 3500 years ago. The expansive site features reconstructed dwellings and stone tool workshops, offering a glimpse into Jomon-period life.
Excavations have revealed jade raw materials, processed artifacts, and evidence of stone tool production, demonstrating the importance of jade as a resource for the people of that time. Large jade beads and magatama are believed to have held special significance in their society, making the Chojagahara Site a crucial location for understanding Jomon jade culture.
Adjacent to the Chojagahara Site is the Chojagahara Archaeological Museum, which showcases valuable materials excavated from the site, including jade artifacts and stone tools. The museum provides detailed information on Jomon culture, daily life, and jade mining and processing.
The Chojagahara Site is a precious place where you can experience both history and nature. Learn about Jomon daily life and jade culture, and contemplate the lives of the ancient people.
