Overview

Karasayama Castle Ruins is located atop 247-meter Karasayama Mountain in Sano City, Tochigi Prefecture. Its origins trace back to the early Kamakura period when Kato Kageharu, a retainer of Minamoto no Yoritomo, established his base here. Remarkably, this renowned castle stood for approximately 700 years, until the Meiji era's castle abolition order. During the Sengoku period, the Sano clan ruled the castle, facing formidable enemies like Uesugi Kenshin and the Hojo clan, becoming known for its robust fortifications. The highlight of Karasayama Castle is undoubtedly the stunning view from the summit. From the Tengu-iwa (Tengu Rock) observation point, visitors can enjoy a panoramic vista of the expansive Kanto Plain. The remaining stone walls are also a must-see. Especially noteworthy is Karasayama Shrine, located at the former honmaru (main keep), which enshrines Fujiwara no Hidesato, believed to have been involved in the castle's construction, making it a popular power spot.
