Goryokaku is a star-shaped fort built at the end of the Edo period by the Hakodate Magistrate's Office. Completed in 1866, it was a state-of-the-art fort at the time, incorporating Western construction techniques. The designer was a French engineer, Tantou Verney. Goryokaku became the stage for the Battle of Hakodate, and its history concluded in 1869 when the old shogunate army surrendered to the new government army. Today, Goryokaku is designated as a Special Historic Site of Japan and has been developed into a lush green park.
