Ankokuji Temple

Overview

Ankokuji Temple is a temple of the Shingon sect, Toyoshan branch, located in Chuo-ku, Kobe. Its mountain name is Manyu-zan, and its principal deity is Yakushi Nyorai (Bhaishajyaguru). Its founding is said to date back to the Muromachi period. It was once located at the entrance to Kobe Port and was a place of worship for sailors. Even today, it is cherished as a guardian deity of the port city of Kobe. The temple grounds include a main hall enshrining Yakushi Nyorai, a bell tower, and a kuri (temple kitchen), offering beautiful cherry blossoms in spring and stunning autumn leaves, making it a place to enjoy the scenery throughout the year. Ankokuji Temple is also known for its commanding view of the beautiful Kobe Port, a symbol of the city, providing a tranquil escape from the urban bustle. While the temple's founding is attributed to the Muromachi period, details remain unclear. However, during the Edo period, it served as a significant place of worship for sailors due to its location at the entrance to Kobe Port. Although Ankokuji Temple was once situated directly by the sea, it is now located in the heart of Kobe city. Nevertheless, the temple still offers breathtaking views of Kobe Port. Ankokuji Temple is a vital site preserving Kobe's history and culture and is beloved by many.
