The John Manjiro Museum, located in Tosashimizu City, Kochi Prefecture, introduces the life of John Manjiro (Kanamitani Manjiro), who introduced American culture to Japan before the arrival of the Black Ships.
Born into a fishing family in Nakama, Tosashimizu City, Manjiro's life took a dramatic turn at the age of 14 when his fishing boat was wrecked and he was stranded on a deserted island. After four months of survival, he was rescued by an American whaling ship.
In America, he learned English, navigation, and whaling from the captain, gaining exposure to Western culture. After spending ten years in America, he returned to Japan.
Upon his return, he contributed to Japan's opening and modernization. His knowledge and experience gained in America significantly contributed to Japan's development.
The John Manjiro Museum exhibits a timeline of his life, photographs, and letters. You can also learn about whaling and navigation techniques he learned in America, and the Western culture he brought back to Japan.
The museum is nestled in the beautiful natural surroundings of Tosashimizu City. After visiting the museum, explore the nearby tourist attractions. Enjoy the magnificent nature of Ashizuri Cape and Ryugu Coast.
The John Manjiro Museum is a museum that anyone can enjoy, not just history buffs. Please visit!
