Located in the Shingai district of Kunimi-cho, Unzen City, the Nabeshima Residence (former Nabeshima Family Residence) in Kunimi Shingai Koji Historical and Cultural Park is the former site of the Nabeshima clan's residence, the lords of the Shingai territory of Saga Domain. It's designated as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings. Shingai Koji, developed during the Edo period, thrived as a samurai district centered around the Nabeshima residence, and its beautiful streetscape, preserving the atmosphere of that time, still remains today. You can stroll through the streets, admiring details like the arrow bamboo hedges protecting the residences and the stone walls topped with *tsubuteishi* (stones used for defense).
The Nabeshima Residence features numerous precious historical buildings, including the main house incorporating modern Japanese architecture from the Meiji and Taisho periods, and the retired residence built in 1860. These are designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan. Inside, exhibits and historical materials offer glimpses into the luxurious lifestyle of the time.
The Nabeshima Residence's garden features a beautiful *karesansui* (dry landscape) style garden. On a clear day, you can enjoy views of Mount Unzen Fugen-dake and across to Kumamoto Prefecture. The garden bursts with seasonal flowers—azaleas in spring and *hikanzakura* (winter cherry blossoms) in winter—providing beautiful scenery throughout the year.
The Nabeshima Residence in Kunimi Shingai Koji Historical and Cultural Park is a captivating tourist spot where you can experience history and nature. Come and immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the Edo period!
