The Mori Ogai Former Residence is the house where the Meiji-era literary giant, Mori Ogai, lived from 1922 to 1922. Ogai was a multifaceted individual, serving as a military doctor, novelist, translator, and critic. This former residence offers a precious glimpse into his later life.
The house is characterized by its unique architectural style, a blend of Western and Japanese architecture. The Western-style section reflects Ogai's embrace of Western culture, while the Japanese-style section showcases his respect for traditional Japanese culture.
The residence displays Ogai's personal belongings and writings. His study and bedroom are preserved, showcasing his desk, chair, and books. His bedding and pillow are also on display.
There is also an exhibition corner explaining Ogai's life and works, detailing his upbringing, his time as a military doctor, novelist, translator, and critic. His masterpieces, such as "Maihime" (The Dancing Girl), "Takasebune" (The Boatman of Takase River), and "Gari" (Wild Geese), are also featured.
