Higashine's Great Keyaki Tree stands majestically on the site of the former Odajima Castle's main keep. Said to be over 1500 years old, it likely predates the castle itself. Late Edo period maps depict 22 Keyaki trees besides this giant, indicating a once beautiful Keyaki tree lined landscape. After the male Keyaki tree withered in the Meiji period, this female tree remains, a testament to time.
Designated a Special Natural Monument of Japan, Higashine's Great Keyaki is renowned as the largest of its kind. Its overwhelming presence and vitality deeply move visitors. Enjoy its changing beauty throughout the year, from the fresh green of spring, to the lush summer foliage, and the vibrant autumn colors. Located on the grounds of Higashine Municipal Higashine Elementary School, it's cherished as a school symbol.
Higashine's Great Keyaki offers a powerful sense of nature's resilience and tranquil healing. Experience its grandeur firsthand.
