Overview

Tenryu-ji Temple, located in Kani City, Gifu Prefecture, is a Soto Zen Buddhist temple. It houses Japan's largest memorial tablet dedicated to Akechi Mitsuhide. Mitsuhide served Oda Nobunaga, but famously betrayed and killed him in the Honnō-ji Incident. Tragically, Mitsuhide himself was defeated and killed by Toyotomi Hideyoshi just 13 days later. Tenryu-ji Temple was built as a memorial temple for Mitsuhide, to commemorate his life and deeds. The temple grounds contain numerous historical sites related to Mitsuhide, making it a must-see for history buffs. For example, there's the Hokyo-in-to pagoda, believed to be Mitsuhide's grave, and displays featuring swords he is said to have used.
