Mito, Toyomachi, Kure City is a port town located on Toyoshima Island in the southeastern part of Kure City, Hiroshima Prefecture. During the Edo period, it flourished as a port where ships would wait for favorable winds, with many vessels coming and going. As a result, the town was lined with merchant houses and inns, bustling with activity. However, in the early Showa period, the port's function declined, and the town gradually became quieter.
Today, many buildings retain their former appearance and the area is designated as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Historic Buildings. Walking through the town, you'll feel like you've stepped back in time.
In addition to the buildings preserving the old atmosphere, Mito boasts numerous historical sites. For example, several old shrines and temples remain, such as the Ebisu Shrine and the Sumiyoshi Shrine. There are also the remains of a residence where the Gokyo (five regents) are said to have stayed during the Shichikyo-ochi incident (the flight of seven court nobles).
Mito is a charming place where you can experience history and culture. Why not spend some time strolling through the old streets, visiting historical sites, and relaxing?
