Zeze Shrine is located in Otsu City, Shiga Prefecture. Its former official ranking was that of a prefectural shrine (kensha). Tradition holds that its origins lie in Emperor Tenji's designation of this location as a sacred precinct (okuri-chi) upon moving the capital to Otsu Palace. In the 6th year of Emperor Tenmu's reign, the deity, Miketsu-no-kami, was enshrined here from Yamato Province, serving as the tutelary deity of the Grand Steward's sacred precinct (daizen-shoku no okurisha).
Subsequently, Toyotomi Hideyori and Tokugawa Ieyasu showed deep reverence for the shrine, donating various sacred objects. As a result, Emperor Higashiyama bestowed upon it the title of Zeze Dai-myojin. Since the founding of Zeze Castle, the successive Honda lords displayed profound piety towards the shrine, repeatedly contributing to its land holdings, buildings, and construction.
The present gate is the former main gate of Zeze Castle's inner citadel, designated as an Important Cultural Property. Its imposing structure evokes the bustling atmosphere of the old castle town.
Other subsidiary shrines within the grounds include Atago-sha, Matsuo-sha, Inari-sha, and Tsukido Ryujin, each enshrining its own deity and offering unique blessings.
The peaceful and serene atmosphere of the shrine grounds makes it an ideal place for those seeking tranquility away from the urban hustle and bustle. It's a perfect spot for a refreshing break, immersing yourself in history and enjoying the quiet air.
