Mibu-dera Temple is a temple of the Shingon sect's Chizan branch, founded during the Heian period and located in Nakagyo Ward, Kyoto City. It's renowned as a temple deeply connected to the Shinsengumi. In 1863, the Shinsengumi used Mibu-dera as their headquarters, and numerous famous members, including Kondo Isami and Hijikata Toshizo, trained there. Even today, the temple retains a strong Shinsengumi presence; the grounds include Mibuzuka, the collective grave of seven Shinsengumi members. Mibuzuka also houses a bust of Kondo Isami and the graves of the first captain, Serizawa Kamo, and Hirayama Goro, making it an unmissable spot for history enthusiasts. Mibu-dera is captivating not just for Shinsengumi fans but also for history lovers in general. However, Mibu-dera's history isn't limited to the Shinsengumi. Kukai, Kobo Daishi, visited during the Heian period, and numerous inherited Buddhist statues and religious implements remain as temple treasures. Furthermore, Mibu-dera is famous for its beautiful gardens, where you can enjoy flowers throughout the year. The cherry blossoms in spring and autumn foliage are particularly stunning, attracting many tourists. Mibu-dera is a charming temple where history and nature harmoniously coexist.
