The Mikuni Port (former Sakai Port) breakwater, located at the mouth of the Kuzuryu River in Mikuni-cho, Sakai City, Fukui Prefecture, is Japan's first Western-style breakwater. Construction began in 1878 (Meiji 11) and was completed in 1882 (Meiji 15). The breakwater, a 511-meter-long stone structure, functions as both a breakwater and a training wall. Dutch engineers played a significant role in its construction, greatly influencing the development of modern port construction techniques in Japan. Designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan, the Mikuni Port breakwater is a valuable structure showcasing the technological prowess and ingenuity of its time. Visitors can still see its historical form today. The Mikuni Port area is also home to many other historical buildings and tourist attractions, making it a great place for a stroll.
