Overview

Morito Shrine is a historic shrine visited by Kamakura shogunate generals, its founding by Minamoto no Yoritomo offering a glimpse into the Kamakura period. Yoritomo, having risen to power after responding to the Imperial order of Prince Mochihito, established his base in Kamakura. This shrine, founded by Yoritomo after inviting a divine spirit from Mishima Myojin (now Mishima Taisha Shrine), reveals the power and deep faith of the Kamakura shogunate. Having also served as a place of prayer for the Miura clan, who held the local territory, the shrine's history and faith continue to resonate today. The Senkanmatsu, dramatically perched on a rock, is said to be the site of a meeting between Yoritomo and Wada Yoshimori. The Ishihara Yujiro Memorial Monument was erected in honor of the actor who loved this area and lived near the Hayama Imperial Villa in his later years.
