Futa Tenjin Shrine

Overview

Futa Tenjin Shrine, located in Chofu City, Tokyo, is dedicated to Sugawara Michizane, known as the god of scholarship. Although the founding date is unknown, its inclusion in the Engishiki Jinmyocho, compiled in the early Heian period, suggests a long history of devotion. The serene and verdant grounds offer a tranquil escape from the bustling city. The main shrine building is designated as an Important Cultural Property, showcasing Edo-period architecture. The shrine is also famous as the setting for the forest where Kitaro, the protagonist of Shigeru Mizuki's manga "GeGeGe no Kitaro," resides. Mizuki, a former resident of Chofu City, is said to have used the forest behind the shrine as inspiration for his work. As a result, statues of Kitaro and other yokai (supernatural creatures) are displayed on the grounds, making it a pilgrimage site for fans. The antique market held on the second Sunday of each month attracts many visitors seeking unique finds. A variety of items, including old tools, antiques, and books, are sold, making it an enjoyable experience even just to browse.
