Akasaka Hikawa Shrine, located in Akasaka, Minato-ku, Tokyo, is one of the renowned 'Tokyo Jussha' (Ten Shrines of Tokyo). Its history stretches back to 951 (Tenryaku 5), when it is said that a priest, Renrin Sojo, had a divine dream and enshrined the deity in Ichitsuki Mura (near present-day Akasaka 4-chome). In 1730 (Hyoho 15), by order of the eighth Tokugawa shogun, Yoshimune, the shrine was relocated to its current location. The present shrine buildings, constructed at that time, are designated as tangible cultural properties of Tokyo.
Akasaka Hikawa Shrine offers a serene and verdant sanctuary amidst the urban landscape. The reddish-brown shrine buildings, erected in 1730, evoke a sense of history, while the majestic ginkgo tree provides breathtaking seasonal beauty. The grounds also feature historical spots, including items related to the Tokugawa shogunate and stone monuments echoing the Edo period.
Akasaka Hikawa Shrine is a perfect place for those seeking a peaceful retreat from the city's hustle and bustle. Visit to find tranquility, connect with history, and rejuvenate your spirit.
