Kakunodate Historical Village - Aoyama Residence is a samurai residence located in Kakunodate, Senboku City, Akita Prefecture, designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan.
Its expansive 3,000-tsubo (approx. 9,917 sq m) grounds house the main residence, an armory, the Kaitai Shinsho Memorial Hall, Akita Local History Museum, Samurai Artifacts Museum, the Haikara-kan (antique gallery cafe), Bakumatsu Photograph Gallery, and a period experience hut, showcasing approximately 30,000 precious artifacts.
The main residence, built in the late Edo period, offers a glimpse into the lifestyle of wealthy farmers of that era. The intricate carvings on the fusuma (sliding doors) and ceilings are particularly noteworthy, showcasing the exceptional craftsmanship of the time.
The armory displays swords, spears, bows and arrows, and other weaponry of the period. Armor and helmets are also exhibited, allowing visitors to imagine the life of a samurai.
The Kaitai Shinsho Memorial Hall features original illustrations and documents of the "Kaitai Shinsho," a medical textbook published during the Edo period. This book was a Japanese translation of a Dutch medical text.
