Kato Shrine is dedicated to Kato Kiyomasa, the founder of Kumamoto Castle. Kiyomasa served Oda Nobunaga and Toyotomi Hideyoshi, contributing significantly to the unification of Japan. He later became the first feudal lord of the Kumamoto domain. In 1601, he began construction of Kumamoto Castle, completing it in just three years. The castle is renowned for its strength, having withstood the Satsuma Rebellion and the Great Kumamoto Earthquake. Beyond the castle, Kiyomasa made significant contributions to the development of the Kumamoto domain through water control projects and agricultural improvements. Therefore, he is deeply revered by the people of Kumamoto and affectionately called "Kiyomasa-ko" even today.
