Overview

The Yunomae Manga Museum, located in Yunomae-cho, Kuma-gun, Kumamoto Prefecture, is dedicated to the works of the late Ryosuke Nasu, a renowned political cartoonist. Born in Yunomae-cho in 1920, Nasu became a prominent figure in post-war Japan, creating satirical cartoons that reflected the social and political climate of the time, offering invaluable insight into the public mood. The museum houses approximately 7,000 of Nasu's works. The permanent exhibition showcases his masterpieces, early works, and international pieces. The special exhibition room hosts rotating exhibits, including photography exhibitions, painting exhibitions, and original artwork from famous manga artists. The museum building itself is a masterpiece, designed in the form of a Kijibama, a traditional wooden folk toy from the Hitoyoshi-Kuma region, depicting a person riding a horse. The building's unique exterior captures the dynamic spirit of the Kijibama, appearing as if it's taking flight. A recreated corner of Nasu's study adds another layer of immersion. Visitors can see his desk, chair, and books, offering a glimpse into his creative process.
