Reikanji Temple

Overview

Reikanji Temple is a Rinzai Zen temple of the Myōshin-ji school, founded by Ashikaga Yoshimasa, the eighth shogun of the Muromachi shogunate. It became Yoshimasa's residence in his later years. After retiring to this temple, Yoshimasa devoted himself to culture and the arts, commissioning many artists to create works. This influence is strongly reflected in Reikanji's garden and shoin (a type of Japanese living quarters), allowing visitors to feel the atmosphere of the time. Reikanji's garden is designated as a Place of Scenic Beauty by the Japanese government, offering stunning views throughout the year: the fresh green of spring, the shade of summer, the autumn foliage, and the winter snow. It's also associated with historical figures such as Ashikaga Yoshiaki and Oda Nobunaga, adding another layer to the experience of strolling through the garden.
